The City of Windhoek is not just about rates and taxes, but has a very strong Corporate Social Responsibility CSR) in place for its residents. This year alone saw the City undertaking several activities as proof that is has a soft heart for the people within the municipal boundaries.
The City hosted a Mayoral Christmas Charity Gala Dinner on 28 November at the Golf Club, with funds and items donated to charity groups.
On 30November the City provided Christmas gifts, food and refreshments to over 300 children at Khomasdal Stadium.
As a commitment of the City to honour and commemorate World AIDS Day on 30 November, the City hosted a soccer tournament, which took place under the theme “kicking to zero”at the informal soccer field in the informal settlement. The aim of this event was to create awareness, educate and provide support to those affected and infected.
The Christmas Light Switching ceremony is amongst the regular social events that the city hosts to celebrate Christmas and set the tone for the festive season in the City. During this event goods were donated to vulnerable groups. The event took place in front of the Mayor’s office on 4December, and Her Worship the Mayor, Agnes Kafula, was assisted by Dillish Mathews, the 2013 Big Brother Africa winner, in handing out the gifts to the children.
The 2013 Windhoek Jazz Festival, was amongst the major highlights of the year. The festival had record ticket sales of more than five thousand. Jazz lovers who were banking on buying tickets at the gate were disappointed and turned away, as tickets were sold out.
This event is held to promote entertainment and contribute to the vibrancy of the City. The festival is growing in popularity both locally and regionally, and is graced with performances by both local and international jazz artists.
The City is engaging in these activities to enhance its corporate image, to build awareness and above all to provide support to the residents. The vision of the City of Windhoek is to enhance the quality of life of all the City’s residents, while striving towards its mission, which is to render affordable municipal services.
The City’s corporate responsibility is mandated through its mission and vision. This therefore forms part of its strategic objective and is not an afterthought. The City’s roles and functions are CSR in nature, aimed at ensuring that the municipal area under the City’s functions is well catered for with necessary municipal services and amenities. In future the City is looking forward to continue enhancing and contributing to the betterment of its residents.PF
